Poems about forest and trees

Author: M. Ivana Trevisani Bach

Translator into English: Kiawna Brewster

Tree

Albero

The majestic Beech tree

A deafening noise

rapes the silence of the Wood.

The blade of steel greedily,

screeching[screeches] and vibrating,

tears to pieces the wet big trunk

of the high, marvellous,

majestic Beech tree.

The stem bends,

creaking on a side,

and interlaces its branches

with its brother-branches

seeking a last hug.

Then, with immense rumble,

it crashes abruptly

making the earth tremble,

in the scared big forest

frightened by the last outrage.

Silently, the cut down stem

cries clear pearls of lymph

and shows in the mortal wound

several concentric rings;

imprints of a long and remote past:

snowy, windy, and  freezing winters ,

cheerful concerts of birds' songs

in the tepid May sun.

I observe with sadness and attention,

 that cut, that section of life;

a cryptography graven in the rings,

every season, for secret and coded memory

without understanding its arcane language.

So, at the end of our life,

the dusty black microgrooves,

on which every story was carved,

without a pick up,

without a devise of diffusion,

will remain, forever,

a mysterious, silent message.

Il Maestoso Faggio

Un fragore assordante

stupra il silenzio del bosco.

Stridono, vibrando,

i denti della lama d'acciaio,

e sbranano, ingordi,

 il tronco bagnato

del maestoso, solenne

ed altissimo  Faggio.

Scricchiolando, il fusto

si inclina su un lato

e, tentando un ultimo abbraccio,

intreccia i suoi rami coi rami fratelli.

Poi, s’abbatte di schianto,

con immenso boato,

facendo tremare la terra

nella grande foresta atterrita

e sgomenta

 per l’ultimo oltraggio.

Muto, il fusto appena troncato,

piange limpide perle di linfa

e mostra, nella ferita,

numerosi concentrici anelli;

impronte di un lungo e remoto passato:

inverni di neve, di vento e di ghiaccio,

concerti gioiosi di canti di uccelli

nel tiepido sole

del mese di maggio.

Triste, osservo con attenzione,

quel taglio, quella sezione di vita,

e la crittografia che, ad ogni stagione,

per segreta e cifrata memoria,

negli anelli è stata scolpita,

senza capirne

           l’arcano linguaggio.

Così, alla fine della nostra vita,

i polverosi microsolchi neri,

su cui fu incisa ogni storia,

senza un pick up,

senza un congegno di diffusione,

resteranno, per sempre,

un misterioso,

muto, messaggio.

Trekking in the wood

Trekking in the wood

Distant tramples

of hidden animals

on withered foliage.

The shadow of a shadow,

imperceptible,

brushes against me,

while I’m walking in the woods.

The sigh

of Life,

for a moment,

blows,

lightly,

on my life.

Trekking nel bosco

Calpestii lontani

d'animali nascosti,

su' secchi fogliami.

L‘ombra di un’ombra,

impercettibile,

appena mi sfiora

mentre cammino nel bosco.

Il sospiro

di tutta la vita,

per un attimo,

soffia,

leggero,

sulla mia vita.

Deforestation

The lone, naked tree

in the humid fog

laments

its lost brothers.

The lone tree

rises

moans of twisting branches

to a plumbeous sky

of clouds and sickly fumes.

Attempting impossible embraces

twisting in iron lattices,

new cold companions

without sprouts

without warbling.

The tree alone unique

solidly remains

beneath parallel threads of branches;

metallic plots

woven far away

by invisible spiders.

The lone tree, soaked of tears

and dark tars,

remains

a silent witness

of departed friends,

remains

the solitary memory

of a green Forest.

Disboscamento

L'Albero solo

nell'umida nebbia

piange

i fratelli perduti.

L'Albero solo

innalza

contorti lamenti di rami

al plumbeo cielo

di nubi e di fumi malsani.

E, tentando impossibili abbracci,

s'attorciglia ai tralicci di ferro,

suoi nuovi freddi compagni

senza germogli

e senza gorgheggi.

L'Albero, unico e solo,

saldamente resta,

sotto paralleli fili di rame;

metalliche trame

tessute lontano

da invisibili ragni.

L'Albero solo, resta

bagnato di pianto

e di scuri catrami,

resta

testimone muto

dei fratelli tagliati

e del verde perduto.

Last Refuges

Ultimi rifugi

Scruffles and rustles

Between the bushes and leaves

Indistinct stomping

Of hidden presences

Quivers of wings

Between branches in the forest.

Indecipherable symbols

Of a hidden world

Fearful presences

Surface uncertainties

Fearful

Of being discovered.

Flee from humans

To escape death.

Stropicci e fruscii

fra i cespugli e le frasche

Calpestii confusi

di presenze nascoste

Fremiti d’ali

fra i rami del bosco.

Indecifrabili segni

d’un mondo nascosto,

Timorose presenze

che affiorano incerte

per la paura

d’essere scoperte.

Fuggire gli umani

per sfuggire alla morte.

Cathedral

The shady sky-high trunk cohorts,

dark, wrinkled pillars covered by moss,

raise to the sky the immense breath

of the wood’s life.

Curved frames of flexible branches,

green leafy panes swing;

gentle seesaws of vague embroidery

cradled by the slender July breeze.

Majestic rose-windows

mounted with leafy branches

trembling with shades and ribbons of light

seal, on the bottom, uncertain naves of freshness.

Life crawls in the humus and in the moss

amidst the clusters of thick bushes,

and chants a rosary of buzzes and whispers

cadencing the sacred music of the forests:

The great organ of reeds and trunks

blows softly from breathing stems

the tiny drops rain from branches

vibrate arpeggios on spider webs

echo voice choirs with distant rustling,

light filigree of ferns

whisper chords beneath bushes

the fugue of notes swishing leaves

lost in the dense clusters of shrubs.

As the damp evening approaches

in the swinging leafy Cathedral,

unaware, humble, rises

the choral prayer of the Forest.

+

Let’s leave this last remaining Cathedral

The last Cathedral left,

to pray with the other living beings,

to join to the breath of the world,

to cradle ourselves in the sole wave

in which everything, fluctuating, rests.

Cattedrale

L'ombrosa schiera di altissimi fusti,

scuri, rugosi pilastri coperti di muschi,

innalzano al cielo l'immenso respiro

di tutta la vita del bosco.

Arcuati telai di flessibili rami,

dondolano  verdi vetrate di foglie;

lievi altalene d'incerti ricami

i sommessi gorgheggi d'uccelli nascosti

fan cori a più voci con ruscelli lontani,

i lievi ventagli di filigrane di felci

sussurrano accordi sotto gli arbusti

e la Fuga di note del frusciar delle foglie,

si perde nell'intreccio dei fitti cespugli.

All'approssimarsi dell'umida sera,

nell'oscillante Cattedrale di fronde,

inconsapevole, umile, sale

l'antica preghiera corale

dell'eterna, maestosa, Foresta.

Lasciamo quest’ultimo Duomo che resta,

per pregare con gli altri viventi,

per unirci al respiro del mondo,

per cullarci nell’unica onda

in cui tutto, fluttuando, riposa.

Da un dipinto di Elisa Traverso Lacchini

Liguria’s Olive Trees

Battles of furious north winds

Flood of blue

The stirring of branches

The little leaves

Murmer

Silvery reflections

of the blinding light

Meandering twists of Ligurian memories

Fastened in the tormented trunks

Twist knots in the woods

Between the perspiring stones

Of ancient bands

Forked roots

Suck

Human struggles

That condense

In golden nectars.

Ulivi di Liguria

Battaglie di furie tramontane

inondano d'azzurro

l'agitar de’ rami.

Le piccole foglie

mormorano

argentati riflessi

all'abbaglio della luce.

Tortuosi intrecci di liguri memorie.

serrati nei tormentati tronchi

si torcono nei legnosi nodi.

Fra i sudati sassi

delle antiche fasce

attorte radici

succhiano

le umane fatiche

che distillano

in nettari dorati.

AGAVES

On the rugged cliff, a summit over the sea

The old Agaves of the prickly leaves

Dissected by the sun and crusted with salt,

Raises,

After years of fruitless waiting

The almighty flower of the wedding banner

They celebrate:

Happy rifles

Of suds and of splashes

Yellow confetti

Of perfumed broom flowers

Launched from the bizarre wind

In the transparent sky washed with blue

Tomorrow, delicate, a whisper of death

Will wither the triumphant banner

The shriveled flower will bend

For a last farewell bow

At the magnificent white seagull

That ploughs through the mellow silence of the sky

With blades of white wind

To die

Like the agaves, in celebration!

And then to fly, in silence,

Like light gliders

Towards a far-away sea

Between the light breezes

And the white clouds of lost memories.

AGAVE

Sull’aspra roccia, a picco sul mare,

la vecchia Agave dalle foglie spinose,

disseccate dal sole e incrostate di sale,

innalza,

dopo anni di sterile attesa,

l’altissimo fiore del vessillo nuziale.

Si fa festa:

allegri schioppi

di schiume e di spruzzi,

coriandoli gialli

di ginestre odorose

lanciati dal vento bizzarro

nel limpido cielo lavato d’azzurro.

Domani, lieve, un sussurro di morte

appassirà il trionfale vessillo.

Si fletterà il fiore avvizzito

per un ultimo inchino d’addio ai

bianchi gabbiani reali

che fendono il pastoso silenzio del cielo

con lame di candide ali.

Morire

come l’agave, in festa!

E poi volare, in silenzio,

come alianti leggeri

verso un lontanissimo mare

fra le brezze sottili

e le bianchissime nubi di memorie perdute.

Like a Sunflower

Like a sunflower

In the shriveled field

I bowed my heavy head

But again,

Obstinately,

I rotate

On the withered stem

To follow in the sunset

The unknown movement

Of that mysterious light

Of infinity…

Come girasole

Come girasole

nell'avvizzito campo

ho piegato il mio pesante capo.

Ma ancora,

ostinatamente,

ruoto

sull'appassito gambo

per seguire nel tramonto

l’ignoto movimento

di quella misteriosa luce

d'infinito…

Solitary Crocus

You come out suddenly,

between new grass

and snowy crystals.

Little winter flower,

Weak corolla, of painted watercolor

That, early, you announce

That life is reborn

Again,

Punctually.

Croco Solitario

Sbuchi, improvviso,

fra erbe novelle

e nevosi cristalli.

Piccolo fiore invernale,

tenue corolla, d'acquarello dipinta

che, in anticipo, annunci

che la vita rinasce,

ancora una volta,

 puntuale.

Childhood Flower

Like a celestial corolla of chicory

Awakened me to the world

Wet with shiny frost

But when the day triumphs

Those gentile petals reclose

To not blind me with light

And to conserve some morning drops.

Fiore d'infanzia

Come celeste corolla di cicoria,

 mi svegliai al mondo

bagnata di  brillanti di brina.

Ma quando trionfò il giorno

richiusi quei petali gentili

per non abbagliarmi di luce

e conservare alcune gocce di mattino.

Lost Fleur-de-lis

There were splashes of ble sky

There were many, between the red poppies,

There were many between the waves ofgrain

Too [beautiful/pretty] to stay between s

Between venoms and lethal toxins

The spikes OGM remained

All equal and fertilized

Perfect circles appeared

Geometries pounded by the night

Miserable certificates of scorn and mockery.

FIORDALISI perduti

Erano azzurri spruzzi di cielo

eran zaffiri dispersi nell’oro.

erano tanti, fra i papaveri rossi,

erano tanti fra le onde di grano.

Troppo belli per restare tra noi

fra veleni e letali tossine.

Son rimaste le spighe Ogm,

tutte uguali e fertilizzate.

Son comparsi i cerchi perfetti,

geometrie pestate di notte,

meschini attestati d'irrisione e di burla.

TREASON

(Crazed Climate)

Premature blossoming peach tree

Imprudent,

Turgid

Gem of new life

Watercolor of rose petals

Blossomed

In brief warmth

Of a winter morning

The freezing Russian wind

Surprised you and

Cheated

On a transparent night

Of crystal stars

Now,

Shapeless an shriveled

You cry an icicle of death

In the mute garden

Whitened from frost

TRADIMENTO

 (Clima impazzito)

Fiore precoce di pesco

imprudente,

turgida

gemma di vita novella;

acquarello di petali rosa

sbocciati

nel breve tepore

d’un mattino d’inverno.

Il gelido vento di Russia

ti ha sorpreso e

tradito

in una limpida notte

di cristalli di stelle.

Ora,

informe e avvizzito

piangi un ghiacciolo di morte

nel muto giardino

imbiancato di brina.

Post-industrial Decline

2005, Genova Cornigliano

Amputated pipes,

soot,

mutilated framework

powders,

rust.

Defunct blast furnaces

That still drip

From the deep openings

lacerating sadness

Of enslaved populations

And lives of hardship.

Gray men,

Long since disappeared long ago

Lived in falling hovels

Who appear now

Cross-eyed

Empty and broken

Deserted clearings

Tired trees

Stripped and bare of leaves

Shocked and confused

From the recent events

Of evisceration and gutting

Blown by a gust of wind

Falls, from a contorted branch,

The last leaf of life.

Degrado post-industriale

2005, Genova Cornigliano

Tubi tronchi,

fuliggini,

tralicci monchi,

polveri,

ruggini.

Altiforni defunti

che stillano ancora

dalle bocche profonde

laceranti tristezze

di popoli schiavi

e di vite di stenti.

Uomini grigi,

da tempo scomparsi,

vissuti in tuguri cadenti

che s’affacciano adesso

con strabici occhi,

vuoti e sfondati

sugli spiazzi deserti.

Alberi stanchi

spolpati e sfogliati

stupiti e confusi

dagli eventi recenti

di sventri e di sbanchi.

Soffiata da una folata di vento

Cade, da un ramo contorto,

l'ultima foglia di vita.
